 GARY ANDERSON

Anderson and his parents came to America when Gary was 18. His parents left South Africa because they didn't like the South African government's policy of apartheid. Apartheid separates blacks and whites and doesn't  give blacks equal rights.

Anderson and his family settled in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The second day there, Anderson took some footballs to the high school field to see if he could kick them the way he had kicked rugby and soccer balls all his life. Anderson had never touched an American football before.

The high school football coach happened to see Anderson kicking. He was impressed. He told Anderson he knew the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and could arrange tryout the next day; Anderson kicked a 50-yard field goal on his very first try! Four college coaches were at the tryout. They  each offered Anderson football scholarships to their colleges on the spot. Anderson chose Syracuse University in upstate New york.

Anderson is now one of the best place-kickers in NFL history. He and his wife and two sons live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia. "People don't think about Americans favorably overseas, " Anderson says.
